The Canon G9 X II when housed inside the Fantasea housing is one of the best underwater compact camera systems to ever exist. The camera produces superb results and the housing has good ergonomics.
One of the most important features of this package is the results it can produce with an external wide angle lens, it is probably the most suited system for attaching 'wet' lenses that has existed for the last few years. It even allows use of AOI/Fantasea's new lens bayonet system when working with all the most popular wide angle lenses, with no vignetting.
The camera is unusual in that the primary interface is a touch screen which cannot be used whilst underwater. However with the few physical controls the camera does have, plus the row of touch screen buttons implemented by the Fantasea housing that access the camera's customisable quick menu, every important feature can be accessed relatively easily.
This system does come with a bit of a learning curve, you should definitely allow time to become familiar with the camera well before jumping in the water, though you should really do that with any camera anyway or you'll never be making the most of your gear.
Manual white balance, which allows you to reproduce the natural colour you see underwater, takes six steps to set. This is slower than previous generations of Canon cameras, but it is the same steps every time so with a bit of practice it can be performed in a few seconds. The seriously increased image quality is probably a good trade off against the extra hassle for that one particular feature.
This is an advanced camera, if you are not prepared to spend time learning its features then we suggest you instead look at the Olympus TG-5, which is probably the most user friendly camera on the market right now.
