- Current model Ikelite "DS" Substrobe(s). See strobe
circuitry requirements by serial number (on
Ikelite website). Adapter is NOT compatible with non-Ikelite
strobes.
- Ikelite #4103.51 or #4103.52 digital TTL sync cord for connection
of Adapter to Ikelite Substrobe(s)
Notes:
(1) Exposure compensation is not
provided through the adapter, but can be accessed via the camera's
built-in menus
(2) Dual strobe use requires dual
sync cord. Two strobes cannot be operated by independent adapters.
Two Substrobes cannot be controlled by individual adapters even
if the housing is equipped with two bulkhead connectors.

| Strobes using the Nikonos TTL flash protocol
do not operate correctly with D/iTTL and eTTL cameras, but most
housing manufacturers bring all of the DSLR hot-shoe connections
out to the Nikonos socket anyway. This is done so that you can
use a camera-dedicated strobe in an underwater housing, but unfortunately,
most strobes designed for land use have inadequate output and
coverage for general (i.e. wide-angle) underwater photography.
Users of these cameras must therefore use manual flash if they
want to use conventional underwater strobes (fortunately not
difficult if the camera provides a histogram display), and must
somehow disconnect some of the wires leading from the hot shoe
to the strobe. The Ikelite cables listed above leave out the
connections which cause problems, allowing any Ikelite Substrobe
to be used in manual mode. Strobes which offer variable power
settings are recommended. The DS-50/51, DS-125 and DS-200 strobes
can be used with the Ikelite
EV controller to provide 10 output settings at 1/2-stop increments. |

To use a normal Ikelite -
Nikonos sync cord, or other Nikonos
compatible strobe with the Nikonos socket on a DSLR housing;
you can disconnect the hot-shoe contacts shown in the illustrations
(left and right) or cover the contacts with insulating tape.
Always leave provision to put the connections back as standard:
you may later wish to upgrade to iTTL or eTTL compatible UW flash
equipment. |

Notes: 1) Flexible
vinyl push-on cable caps provided with earlier Ikelite cables
(not current ones) should be discarded. Leaching of plasticiser
from the cap to the O-ring may reduce the service life of the
O-ring. Rigid caps and current Delrin caps shown below are free
from this problem.
2) Ikelite O-rings are nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR). The correct
lubricant is silicone

The O-ring 0118 has a smaller cross-section diameter than the
P9 O-ring used on Japanese conectors (the O-ring groove diameter
of Ikelite plugs is 9.35mm, whereas Sea & Sea plugs have
an O-ring groove diameter of 9.1mm). Hence the Ikelite O-ring
should only be used on Ikelite connectors. Using a Japanese O-ring
on an Ikelite connector will make the plug stiff to insert, but
poses no flooding risk. |
