Desirable Features
 A filter thread or bayonet ring on the lens port (provided either as standard or by an optional adapter) allows wet-lenses (wide-angle and macro converters) and underwater colour-correction filters to be attached.  Most ikelite housings can be used with push-fit adapters and filter holders.  For more information, use the provided link.
 A very wide lens on the camera is not necessarily an advantage underwater.  Almost all compact camera housings come with a flat lens port as standard.  When using a flat port, best wide-angle results are obtained with a main lens of 28mm or longer (35mm equiv.) focal length and a wide adapter.
 A very long zoom lens is of no use underwater.  Water absorbs light and usually contains suspended particles.  Best results are obtained by getting close to the subject.
Manual or user-adjustable white-balance permits optimal use of natural light underwater.
 RAW file output allows image post-processing with minimal loss of quality.
In most cases the built-in flash can be used, but results can be poor in conditions of low visibility and illumination is often cut-off by the lens port.  An optional external flash (usually slave triggered) will reduce backscatter and give greater coverage and illumination.  
 Video lights can be used for stills photography and provide illumination when the camera is used in movie mode.
