Base and multi-purpose adaptersBase adapters provide the attachment at the fixed end of a ball-arm. However, they also have a wide range of applications for attaching things at the free-end (the head).
Note that ¼" UNC 20 (Unified Coarse, 20 threads per inch) is the standard tripod thread size. 3/8" UNC 16 is the large tripod socket size, and also the thread of the ikelite wingnut. Some UNF (Unified Fine) screws are used on American housings (L&M, Top Dawg). European and Japanese housings either use ISO metric (M) threads, or the universal standard ¼" tripod thread.
Permanent ball with bottom socket or studFitted stud is secured with Loctite. It can be removed, but to do so requires a soft-jawed vice and a hard-steel Allen key. O-ring in the base provides friction when only hand tightening is required. Flats on the body allow wrench to be used.
